The separate arts therapies - drama, art, music and dance - are becoming available to increasing numbers of clients, as mental health professionals discover the potential of the arts therapies to reach and help people. But what are the arts therapies, and what do they offer clients? The Arts Therapies provides in one volume a guide to the different disciplines and their current practice and thinking. It presents:

A clear analysis of the relationship between therapist, client and art form

Exploration of the practice and key contributions made to the field by practitioners internationally and within many different contexts

Discussion of how the arts therapies relate to established health services

The Arts Therapies: A Revolution in Healthcare is a unique book that provides a thorough and up-to-date overview of the arts therapies. It will prove invaluable to arts therapists who wish to learn more about the whole field, and to mental health professionals who want to know what the arts therapies can offer their clients.

'Race' and Sport: Critical Race Theory

From the Back Cover:

Critical Race Theory provides a framework for exploring racism in society, taking into account the role of institutions and drawing on the experiences of those affected. Applied to the world of sport, this framework can reveal the underlying social mores and institutionalised prejudices that have helped perpetuate those racial stereotypes particular to sport, and those that permeate broader society.

In this groundbreaking sociological investigation, Kevin Hylton takes on the controversial subject of racial attitudes in sport and beyond. With sport as his primary focus, Hylton unpacks the central concepts of ‘race’, ethnicity, social constructionism and racialisation, and helps the reader navigate the complicated issues and debates that surround the study of ‘race’ in sport. Containing rigorous and insightful analysis throughout, the book explores key topics such as:

    * the origins, applications and terminology of Critical Race Theory
    * the meaning of ‘whiteness’
    * the media, sport and racism
    * anti-racism and sport
    * genetics and scientific racism.

The contested concepts that define the subject of ‘race’ in sport present a constant challenge for academics, policy makers and practitioners in the development of their ideas, policies and interventions. This innovative and challenging book is essential reading for anybody looking to fully understand this important subject.

For primary education students.

Teaching Health & Physical Education in Australian Primary Schools is an introduction to the task of teaching Health and Physical Education (HPE). It provides an account of many of the issues and concerns students will encounter as a beginning teacher working within this Key Learning Area (KLA).

This book reflects the variability and complexity in the KLA as it is represented and experienced across Australian states and territories. Accommodating a diverse range of perspectives, students can adopt and implement approaches that best serve the contexts within which they will teach health, personal development and physical education.

How can or does youth sport reconcile what seems to be a fundamental contradiction between understandings of sport and disability? Has youth sport been challenged in anyway? Have alternative views of sport for disabled people been presented? Examining some of the latest research, this book considers the relationship between sport and disability by exploring a range of questions such as these.

Disability and Youth Sport further challenges current thinking and therefore serves to stimulate progressive debate in this area. Drawing on a breadth of literature from sports pedagogy, sociology of sport, disability studies, inclusive education, and adapted physical activity, a socially critical dialogue is developed where the voices of young disabled people are central. Topics covered include:

An Introduction to Educational Studies: The Student Guide to Themes and Contexts

An Introduction to Education Studies presents a concise overview for students who are new to this area of academic study.

Part 1 introduces the reader to the main themes they will encounter in their study of education such as the sociology of education, the philosophy of education, comparative education, and ethics for educators.

Part 2 explores the contexts within which education takes place in order to stimulate further thinking about education in action. Issues such as disaffection, pupil voice and breaking barriers to learning are introduced to give the reader a feel for such issues and how they might approach them.

Through discussions of relevant literature and research, and the use of case studies and exploratory activities, students are encouraged to actively engage with their learning about theories and disciplines within the study of education and the contexts in which learners live and work. Each chapter is written in an accessible style and provides the reader with start points for further study.

This book serves as a true course companion to meet the needs of students and lecturers working on Education Studies programmes. Prospective teachers may also find the book of interest as the subject matter is discussed in terms of theory and practical applications in a range of educational contexts.

This groundbreaking volume seeks to take the first steps in analyzing the impact of internationalization initiatives from student perspectives. As programs are increasingly delivered overseas and we seek to offer domestic students an international experience, how do we know what works for students and what does not? Encompassing the fast-growing global imperative is a significant challenge for higher education and this collection identifies opportunities for enrichment of the learning environment, with all chapters based on direct research with students.

The book provides essential reading for anyone engaged in internationalization and wishing to learn more about the impact on students of a range of initiatives in order to apply the lessons in their own contexts. Chapters include student responses to the following learning contexts:

"traditional" international contexts, where students study outside their home country for shorter or longer periods;
"trans-national" programs where students study at home or in another country and faculty from the awarding university fly in to deliver courses;
domestic students studying in their home country, with staff seeking to internationalize the curriculum;
students having transformational international experiences in other countries through service learning/volunteering, or study abroad

As a new generation of practitioners engages with service learning, at a time when higher education faces questions about learning outcomes and costs, and in the context of such issues as globalization and the environment, this book poses important questions about practice, institutional sustainability, and future directions. Among these are:

What counts as service learning? What value does it bring to institutions? Is it appropriate for all students? How is globalization impacting service learning?

Divided into three thematic parts, this book successively covers institutional and administrative issues; service learning as a springboard for research; and presents new practices that address emerging challenges and changing student populations.

The contributors review how different institutional types have structured their service learning activities; address the issue of centralization or decentralization; propose better ways to form community partnerships; consider promotion and tenure implications; postulate framing service-learning and community engagement as scholarship; and examine service-learning as a springboard for research.

Further chapters offer a new blueprint for funding to achieve sustainability; examples of international service learning from a European perspective; a case study and framework for using on-line formats to extend the reach of a program; raise the urgent issue of the experiences and contributions of underrepresented students; and present the rationale and processes for developing effective student-led evaluation of programs.

Providing high quality play experiences is an essential part of good early years education, but this can pose a challenge for practitioners who face pressure from a more didactic primary curriculum, and from parents worried that their children will fail to acquire essential skills and knowledge.

By helping the reader to develop their understanding of the complex relationships between play and learning, Play and Learning in the Early Years examines current theoretical perspectives on play, alongside examples of recent and innovative play research from a range of disciplinary and methodological perspectives. With contributions from leading play scholars, it brings together theory, research, policy and practice in relation to play and learning in early years settings. The emphasis is on the relationship between play and learning, and play and pedagogy, and the need to understand these dimensions more substantially in order to teach with confidence.

Included are chapters on:

    *
      the influence of play on thinking, problem-solving and creativity
    *
      cooperative play and learning
    *
      play, risk and outdoor learning
    *
      learning to play in cultural context

There are chapter objectives, reflective points, reflective tasks and suggestions for further reading throughout, to facilitate critical thinking and encourage independent study. Suitable for early years practitioners, early childhood students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and all those who work with and care for young children, this is an exciting and thought-provoking book.

Remembering, telling and reconstructing: oral histories of the northern working-class at leisure in rugby league

Oral histories provide an obvious way to connect sociological debates about the meaning and purpose of leisure with mainstream social histories about the leisure lives of Twentieth Century northern English working-class communities. In this paper we use oral histories as a way of exploring how that working-class past is remembered, related and (re)constructed in a way that celebrates community but perpetuates exclusion. Our focus is the sport of rugby league, played in England in a number of northern towns and cities, which has been the subject of much mythologising about its status as a genuine, working-class game and an expression of working-class community and identity. However, this telling and reconstructing is done in a way that makes normal and natural the whiteness of the game’s northern English supporters. Just as a Channel 4 documentary on the Wibsey Working Men’s Club presented a sympathetic story of pride and alienation among its white, working-class members, so rugby league’s imagined community makes the histories of others harder to be heard and accepted. It is our intention, then, to try to give a voice to one such black (outsider) history, to try to make visible the ways in which white (insider) histories work to include and exclude through the process of history telling.
